iii The district
At the centre of Thrissur town, a temple to Shiva in the traditional Kerala style, with wood carving and mural work, held to date from around the eighth or ninth century. The grounds and the surrounding teak maidan were laid out under Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Kochi.
The annual festival held at the Vadakkumnathan grounds in April or May, first organised by Sakthan Thampuran with the participation of ten temples, among them Thiruvambadi and Paramekavu. It is the event by which the district is most widely known.
Founded in 1930 by the poet Vallathol Narayana Menon on the banks of the Bharatapuzha, and long regarded as the principal school of Kathakali. Its founding is credited with reviving Kathakali, Kutiyattam and Mohiniyattam at a point when all three were close to disappearing.
One of the most visited temples in India, in the town of Guruvayur — which is also one of the seven assembly segments of this constituency. Its earliest surviving temple records date to the seventeenth century.
The largest waterfall in Kerala, on the Chalakudy river, which rises in the Western Ghats. It is among the state’s most visited natural sites and a recurring subject in discussions of tourism development in the district.
The main wholesale market in Thrissur town. Its modernisation is one of the projects named by the Minister of State in September 2026 as having moved forward under the Swadesh Darshan programme.

Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, he said three projects for the district under Swadesh Darshan 2024 — including the modernisation of the Thrissur Sakthan Market — had moved forward with the cooperation of the State government, and described them as projects he had pursued since taking office.
