Suresh Gopi was born on 26 June 1958 in Alappuzha district, on the Kerala coast. The Press Information Bureau records the date and place in its announcement of his appointment as Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas.

He was born into a family connected to the film business: his father, K. Gopinathan Pillai, worked as a film distributor, and his mother was V. Gnanalekshmi Amma. He has three brothers.

His first appearance on screen came as a child performer in the 1965 Malayalam film Odayil Ninnu. It was not the start of a continuous career — more than two decades separate it from his working life as an adult actor — but it is the earliest documented point in a screen record that would eventually run to hundreds of films.

He studied at Fatima Mata National College in Kollam, taking a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and then a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature. Both qualifications are listed in the Government of India’s own account of his background.

The combination is an unusual one for a performer, and it is worth noting plainly rather than embroidering: a science first degree followed by a literature master’s, at a college on the Kerala coast, in the years before he began working in cinema.

His adult screen career began in the mid-1980s, with an uncredited role in Niramulla Raavukal in 1986. The films that made his name — and the particular screen identity he became known for — belong to the decade that followed.

He married Radhika Nair in February 1990. Their eldest daughter, Lakshmi, died in a road accident in infancy; the charitable trust through which his philanthropic giving is widely reported to be made carries her name. Their son, Gokul Suresh, works as an actor.
