04 Ministerial Responsibilities
Portfolio I
The Ministry of Tourism is the nodal agency for developing and promoting tourism in India. It frames national policy, runs destination-development programmes such as Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD, promotes India in domestic and overseas markets under Incredible India, and works with States and Union Territories, which own and operate most tourism assets on the ground.
Suresh Gopi took charge as Minister of State for Tourism on 11 June 2024. The Cabinet Minister for the portfolio is Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
Portfolio II
The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas is responsible for the exploration and production of oil and natural gas; for refining, distribution and marketing of petroleum products; and for their import, export and conservation. Its work spans LPG access, the national gas grid, city gas distribution and cleaner fuels.
Suresh Gopi took charge as Minister of State on 11 June 2024, welcomed by the Cabinet Minister, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. He succeeded Shri Rameswar Teli in the role.

05 From Cinema to Public Life
Suresh Gopi appeared on screen as a child in Odayil Ninnu in 1965 and returned as an adult performer in the mid-1980s. Over the decades that followed he worked in more than two hundred films, won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Kaliyattam at the 45th National Film Awards, sang as a playback artist, and presented television to a very large Malayalam audience.
Public office came later and by a different route. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in April 2016 under the constitutional provision for members nominated by the President, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party that October, and contested Thrissur twice without success before winning it in 2024.
06 The Constituency
Thrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala — a district built around the Vadakkumnathan temple and the annual Thrissur Pooram, and home to Kerala Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthy, the Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple and the Athirappilly falls on the Chalakudy river.
As a parliamentary constituency it has existed since 1951 and is made up of seven assembly segments, all within Thrissur district: Guruvayur, Manalur, Ollur, Thrissur, Nattika, Irinjalakuda and Puthukkad. It has been represented in turn by the Indian National Congress, the Communist Party of India and, since 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, Suresh Gopi said three projects for Thrissur under Swadesh Darshan 2024, together worth ₹99.7 crore, had moved forward with the cooperation of the State government. He said: “If Thrissur gets a project worth Rs 99.7 crore under Swadesh Darshan, that translates directly into the lives of the people.”

Thiruvananthapuram
Suresh Gopi inaugurated the PM-Kisan Utsav Diwas event organised by ICAR-CTCRI in Thiruvananthapuram, held in connection with the release of the 23rd instalment of the PM-Kisan scheme. He described PM-Kisan as the world’s largest scheme providing direct financial assistance to farmers.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that about 10 crore 33 lakh deposit-free LPG connections had been released under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, and that the Government had approved 25 lakh additional connections during 2025-26.
